This is a practical workshop looking at techniques and strategies for fulfilling the needs of the most able Physics students.
Winning a place at the most selective universities is increasingly competitive and being able to perform at the top level in admissions tests and interviews is essential for students looking to win these places. Achieving top grades at A-Level and being able to go beyond A-Level to tackle more complex problems is essential.
This workshop will delve deeper into the A-Level syllabus to demonstrate approaches to teaching which develop higher order skills and a more sophisticated and creative approach to problem-solving. It will also look at opportunities to broaden students’ understanding of modern approaches to physical science including integrating computational physics into your teaching.
Finally, the workshop will also explore the role of practical work in stretching the most able students in the classroom including examples of extension to standard experiments and developing more sophisticated analysis tools.
KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This Masterclass will enable you to:
Adapt your teaching to stretch the most able Physics students
Support your students to access top marks in public exams
Prepare your students to study Physical Science and Engineering beyond school
Prepare your students effectively for university entry tests
FACILITATOR
Peter is an experienced senior leader and governor who support schools in developing their strategic vision and approach. As a previous Deputy Head (Academic) at Westminster School, Peter has a particular expertise in high performing educational institutions and has worked with some of the top schools in the UK both independently and for consultancies such as JMC INSET and the National Governance Association. He also has expertise in curriculum design and implementation.
His passion has always been teaching Physics in a way which both stretches and supports students so that they can reach their potential. While Physics can be intimidating, it is a subject which is vast in its scope and enjoyable in its application. As examiner for Cambridge International, Peter appreciates the importance of examinations, but firmly believes that teaching to the test does students a disservice. He has particular expertise in preparing students for the most selective universities, including the Oxford PAT, and Cambridge NSAA and ENGAA.
