One of the new evaluation areas in the Ofsted framework is ‘leadership and governance’ - signalling the importance of governors in securing school improvement. School leaders walk the corridors every day and are used to inspections, but governors are not; they are volunteers often from non-education sectors. It’s vital, therefore, that governors are supported ahead of inspection so they are prepared for the process and know what to expect. Moreover, it’s important that governors are helped to articulate their role and impact to inspectors. In this half day masterclass, education expert and governor Matt Bromley will offer practical advice to governors and clerks on how to the governing body can demonstrate the positive impact of their actions and articulate the ways in which they successfully support and challenge school leaders.
By the end of this masterclass, you will be able to:
Understand what the new Ofsted framework means for governance and the 'leadership and governance' evaluation area
Explain the inspection methodology and process from a governor's perspective
Describe what Ofsted consider to be effective governance and the expected roles of governors
Prepare confidently for meetings with inspectors, including knowing which documents to have to hand
Articulate the governing body's role in supporting and challenging school leaders
Demonstrate the tangible impact of governance decisions on school improvement
